The services of management of networks by IT service providers for their clients.
The scope of network services extends from LAN and WLAN management, unified communications to Network Consulting Services and Network implementation services.
The advantages of network services/managed network services to client companies are as follows:
1. Client companies can focus on their core competencies and save substantial sums of money in building and maintaining network capabilities.
2. Client companies can minimize their risks of network failure or data loss due to the same by offloading the risk to network service providers.
3. Ease in meeting compliance requirements of regulatory authorities owing to expertise of service providers in the same.
TOOLS FOR NETWORK CONEECTIVITY
Local Area Network (LAN): At its core, the network is fully redundant with multiple 10 Gbps links connecting core nodes and several high profile buildings on campus.
Wireless Access: A state of the art wireless network consisting of more than 4,500 wireless access points (APs) spans the entire campus.
Wide Area Network (WAN): Remote offices are linked to the main campus network using connections ranging from 1.5 to 100 Mbps. Such locations include offices in Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Nashville, and Agriculture Extension facilities at various locations in Tennessee.
Internet Connectivity: Multiple, redundant connections provide the community with more than 10 Gbps of commodity Internet access.
NETWORK SECURITY
Firewalls: Two core firewalls and a multitude of smaller, department-size firewalls, are deployed and managed by Network Services.
Secure remote access is facilitated through VPN access devices (appliances) that support both IPSec and SSL/VPN access.
Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) are deployed at strategic locations on the network in order to provide an additional layer of security and compliance for the campus community.
APPLICATION LAYER
An abstraction layer reserved for communications protocols and methods designed for process-to-process communications across an Internet Protocol (IP) computer network.
Application layer protocols use the underlying transport layer protocols to establish host-to-host connections for network services.
PORTS NUMBERS
Many Internet Protocol based services are associated with a particular well-known port number which is standardized by the Internet technical governance.
